THE ALUMNI PROJECT
PROJECT DIGNITY
Project Dignity is an annual workday, sponsored by the Society, to provide maintenance to the valley's
cemeteries.  The 2003 workday was held April 24 at Beaver Union and Stockdale Cemeteries.  Volunteers
cleaned grave markers, cleaned the grounds, and straightened and reset toppled monuments.  The above two
images show a marker before and after restoration.  The image below shows members of the Beaver
Volunteer Fire Department using the "Jaws of Life" rescue tools to raise a monument back upon its base.

After many years and hundreds of hours of research, writing, and design work, the The Beaver
Valley Historical Society’s first historical publication is in the hands of the publisher.
The Patriot
Project
, as it has come  to be known, was one of the first projects identified by the Society trustees
several years ago.  The vision was to preserve the stories of the selfless service of the many military
veterans of the Beaver Valley.  The primary component of the project was the publication of a book
chronicling the service of their military veterans. Initially, it was thought the project would require as
many as two years to complete and involve the stories of perhaps 200 veterans.  Upon completion,
the book will involve the records of nearly 900 veterans and hundreds of period photographs.  The
project has proven to be of enormous interest to Beaver Valley residents, as many are anxiously
awaiting the actual book.
A proof of the book was available for viewing at the Society’s booth at the Beaver Oktoberfest.  The
book will be hard bound and consist of over 300 pages of biographical information.  It is being printed
by Agreka History Publishing LLC located in Utah. This company publishes family trees, community
histories, and other books of historic nature.  It a recent email the staff at Agreka stated “[This] is a
beautifully done book.  Very impressive…...magnificent job”.  Their comments are a tribute to the
many people who have worked on the project.
Individual biographies date back as far as the Revolutionary War.  Over forty young men were
identified as giving the ultimate sacrifice for the country.  Each of these men receive the special
designation as being members of
The Roll Of Honor.
Orders are being accepted through the month of October so as to assure the books arrival by
Christmas.  The books will surely become a treasured keep sake for the scores of families with
members chronicled in
Rally ‘Round The Flag.
To order this piece of Pike County history contact a trustee of the Beaver Valley Historical Society or
mail payment of $40 to the Society postal address.  If you wish the book to be shipped directly to you
please include $5 for shipping.  For more information about the publication visit the publisher’s web
site located at www.historypreserved.com.

The Alumni Project was the Society's major preservation project in 2002.  As the valley's three existing
schools were replaced with a new K-12 building, it became the goal of the Society the preserve the heritage
of those centers of learning.  The project was threefold.  First, existing photographs of graduating classes
were preserved by placing them in new frames and matting.  Second, with the cooperation of the local
school administration, two large display cases were dedicated to each of the two original high schools.
Collections within these cases include uniforms, trophies, photographs, graduation announcements, and
more.  The third element of the project was the cleaning and repairing of the existing trophy collection of
Beaver High School.

The society's first Summer Picnic was held July 11, 2004 at the Stockdale Community Center in Marion
Township.  Approximately 100 members and friends gathered for a wonderful dinner prepared by the
Stockdale Roots Group.  Other activities included games for children, slide shows of historic images, a
raffle, and vintage baseball game.  Using 19th century rules and equipment, players slugged it out in the
sizzling summer heat.  Bruises, cuts, and scrapes were the theme of the day as many players took to the
field for the first time in many years.  The game was eventually called due to exhaustion; California 13 -
Beavertown 13.  The images below show some of the action.
Beginning October 23, members of the BVHS and community met at one of three local sites for Make A
Difference Day projects.  Our Society organized three projects.  Two of the projects involved ongoing
efforts at Beaver Union and Stockdale Cemeteries.  The last involved the building of picnic tables at the
Beaver Village Park.  The cemetery projects involved the sizable task of repairing dilapidated historic
crypts.  These projects were funded through a grant by the Ohio Hill Country Heritage Area.  The park
project was funded by Beaver Village Council and American Electric Power.  Volunteers will continue
these projects in the spring, but have already accumulated nearly 400 hours of volunteer efforts.
